Job Description
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES The scope of responsibilities entails providing system-level pre and post-sales support for CIENA’s customer base. This includes testing, troubleshooting, and offering remote technical support for CIENA products. The role requires proficiency in automating data collection and issue resolution using scripting languages such as JavaScript and Python. A solid understanding of fiber optic transport and/or switching protocols is crucial, along with basic expertise in data communications protocols like Ethernet and IP networks. Familiarity with Linux-based systems would be advantageous. The position may also involve on-site interaction with customers regarding network planning, deployment, technical issues, and design.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Automate data collection and issue resolution.
- Provide 24×7 remote technical support for identified CIENA products, including evenings and weekends, as part of on-call duty.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to review field issues and communicate with the Design and Supply Chain teams to address problems.
- Employ debug tools and conduct lab research to assist customers with technical problems, gathering necessary information to escalate incidents to senior engineers. Escalation may involve Engineering/Design, Product/Project Management, Documentation, or Training.
- Provide customer feedback to Quality Assurance, Design, Product Management, Technical Publications, and Training departments.
- Contribute to the publishing of MOP/ISB/FSB documents.
- Contribute to the knowledgebase (KCS).
- Serve as a Customer Lead Engineer for specific customers.
- Perform Resident Engineering functions on-site or remotely.
- Travel to customer sites and Ciena locations globally.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE To qualify for this position, candidates should have:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (e.g., Engineering, Computer Science) from a four-year college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience automating tasks using scripting languages like JavaScript and Python.
- Fundamental knowledge of the operation of fiber optic transport and/or switching equipment.
- Preferably, experience in a technical support role with a Telco industry equipment vendor.
- Basic problem-solving experience with OTN/SONET/SDH equipment, Carrier Ethernet equipment, or associated fiber optic facilities.
CANDIDATE PROFILE The ideal candidate should possess the following qualities and skills:
- Proficiency in various office software applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve problems.
- Self-motivation, excellent time management skills, and the ability to work with minimal supervision based on broad guidelines.
- Understanding of transport and switching systems for telecommunications applications and Optical Networking.
- Familiarity with various types of test equipment for optical and protocol testing.
- Proficiency in system-level troubleshooting on fiber optic telecommunications transport and switching equipment.
- Strong foundational knowledge of OTN, SONET/SDH/DWDM, and Carrier Ethernet protocols, as well as a general understanding of other switching/transport concepts.
- Knowledge of computers, data communications, Linux, and IP networks would be beneficial.
- Experience with network management systems would be advantageous.
- Strong background in building relationships and customer focus.
- Ability to work well in a team.
- Ability to handle stressful situations.
